Do I Need to refrigerate my ghee?
No. Since all the dairy has been removed, our ghee is shelf stable even after opening. Once opened keep in a cool dry place, such as a pantry or a cabinet, away from direct sunlight. Sunlight can cause the ghee to oxidize, dulling its beautiful color and lessening its nourishing qualities.
How long is my ghee good for?
Unopened, your ghee is good for up to a year. Once you open it, your ghee is best used within 4 months. You should use a clean, dry utensil so to not cross-contaminate, and be sure to lid.
Many people say that ghee is dairy free. How is ghee dairy-free if it is made from butter?
In the process of making ghee, all of the milk solids and milk proteins (lactose and casein) are cooked and filtered out leaving behind just the pure healthy butter fat. However, not all ghee companies have the same process and should be looked at individually. Farm to Gold Ghee has been tested and is approved as lactose and casein free, making it ideal for ease of digestion. With that said, if you have a true dairy allergy we always recommend consulting your physician.
Is your ghee grass-fed?
Yes! Our ghee is truly grass-fed! The cows are pasture raised and eat a diet of 100% grass and are supplemented in the winter with hay, bale age and trace minerals. Since the cows are not milked through the winter they are able to rest (the way nature intended.) This is the highest quality standard for grass-fed butter.
The cows are grass-fed because the sun is the only source of new energy on the planet and the best way to capture that is to keep the fields covered year-round with a dense sward of grasses. This reduces the need for fossil fuels, greatly increases soil health and provides the cows with a natural balanced diet. Milk from grass-fed cows is high in Conjugated Linoleic Acid or CLA, which is known to prevent cancer; as well as having a balance of Omega-3 and Omega-6, which is optimum for human health. The cows calve seasonally so that they can produce most of their milk while they are on lush pasture.
Why does your ghee taste so good?
1. The butter we use is superior on many levels. Being a true grass-fed butter, the butter fat content is higher than others. The cows are cared for in exceptional ways including using European milking methods and solar panels for a thorough and gentle milking. The cows on the farm are not milked through the winter so that they do not require a high grain diet and can take the break nature intended resulting a higher butterfat.
2. We use traditional Ayurvedic techniques to prepare the ghee in small batches over an open flame.
3. We put A LOT of love into it!
How can I use my ghee?
Ghee can be used anywhere you use oil in a cooking or in herbal medicine. You can also use it in place of butter as a spread on toast or pancakes, etc. Since it is concentrated, you can get away with using less ghee than you think. So if you use 2 tbs of olive oil to sauté some veggies, you may want to start with 1 tbs of ghee. Play around with it!
Can I use ghee on my skin?
Yes! By eating ghee on a regular basis you are already doing your skin a favor by alleviating dryness. Ghee nourishes the body both inside and out. Ghee can be used to make decadent skin products. Keep an eye out for many wonderful Farm to Gold ghee products for your skin!
Will my ghee stay a solid consistency?
Ghee is solid at room temperature but just like coconut oil, it will soften at warmer temperatures. Do not be alarmed. If your ghee"melts" during the warmer months, it is still just as good to use.
