What is Ghee?

Nature’s nourishing gift for delicious and healthy cooking.

There are countless examples of why ghee is gold.  Ghee is a healthy fat made from grass fed butter and is used in both cooking and in health maintenance.  We make ghee by cooking the butter using traditional Ayurvedic practices, removing all of the milk solids, water, and impurities. What’s left is a a lactose-free, casein-free, and shelf-stable cooking oil that becomes solid at room temperature.  From a cooking perspective ghee is incredible to cook with!

As a very versatile cooking oil and spread, it can be used as butter or in place of any oil in cooking.  It is great on pancakes and shines when frying an egg or roasting vegetables.  Because it has a very high flashpoint of 485 degrees, you can cook it at very high heat and not worry about oxidation. From a health perspective, ghee made from grass fed butter boasts the following health benefits for body and mind.
-Highest source of CLA’s and butyric acid
-Promotes healthy digestion and nutrient assimilation
-Ghee is alkaline- unlike many oils or butter when heated
-Supports the body’s natural ability to cleanse
-Supports immune health
-Alleviates overall dryness
-Brings calm and stability to the mind
-Builds nourished, supple, flexible tissues and healthy joints

What is Ghee?

Ayurveda

The Ancient secrets to a balanced life…

According to Ayurveda, the ancient system of healing from India, ghee is a superfood, or as we like to say, a superfat! Ghee nourishes and hydrates the body (and mind) better than any other oil. Ghee builds a strong immune system which is referred to as ojas, the ultimate energy reserve of the body, giving us physical and mental endurance.  Adequate ojas determines a strong, stable, healthy body and calm mind, one that is able to withstand stress and stay nourished.  Ghee is considered gold in Ayurveda, promoting both health and longevity.

Ayurveda offers us tools in the form of food and lifestyle choices for maintaining health and overall well being that are uniquely tailored to one’s unique mind/body type. For example- getting adequate sleep, managing exercise that is specific to your own body, and maintaining an appropriate diet that is not only specific to you but also changes with the seasons. A primary component of Ayurveda is honoring seasonal changes and adjusting our diet and routines accordingly. It is through these food and lifestyle choices that we can nourish, rejuvenate, and heal.  When body and mind are healthy and balanced, we are truly able to have the best possible experience of life.

Kriemhild Dairy Farm

Happy Cows on Grass…

Our ghee is made from 100% Kriemhild Dairy grass-fed sweet meadow butter. This beautiful farm is located in Hamilton, NY and is run by Lindsey Jakubowski and Bruce Rivington and family.

The happy cows from Kriemhild graze on 737 acres and an additional 830 acres used for hay production for feed in the winter. These cows are truly grass-fed. In honoring the seasonal cycles, the farm dries their cows through the winter and then resumes milking in the spring when the lush green grass begins to grow.

100% of the cows’ diet is derived from the pasture and supplemented with feed composed of dry hay, baleage, minerals and mixing salt. No corn silage or grain is fed to the cows.
The cows are pasture fed because the sun is the only source of new energy on the planet and the best way to capture that is to keep the fields covered year-round with a dense sward of grasses. This reduces the need for fossil fuels, greatly increases soil health and provides the cows with a natural balanced diet. Milk from grass-fed cows is high in Conjugated Linoleic Acid or CLA, which is known to prevent cancer; as well as having a balance of Omega-3 and Omega-6, which is optimum for human health. Kriemhild cows calve seasonally so that they can produce most of their milk while they are on lush pasture. The increased use of pasture decreases the amount of soil and water runoff and is always a pleasure to look at. They do not use herbicides or pesticides and do not ever treat their cows with synthetic growth hormone or rBGH. The butter is also GMO free.

FAQS

Do I Need to refrigerate my ghee?

No. Since all the dairy has been removed, our ghee is shelf stable even after opening. Once opened keep in a cool dry place, such as a pantry or a cabinet, away from direct sunlight. Sunlight can cause the ghee to oxidize, dulling its beautiful color and lessening its nourishing qualities.

How long is my ghee good for?

Unopened, your ghee is good for up to a year. Once you open it, your ghee is best used within 4 months. You should use a clean, dry utensil so to not cross-contaminate, and be sure to lid.

Many people say that ghee is dairy free. How is ghee dairy-free if it is made from butter?

In the process of making ghee, all of the milk solids and milk proteins (lactose and casein) are cooked and filtered out leaving behind just the pure healthy butter fat. However, not all ghee companies have the same process and should be looked at individually. Farm to Gold Ghee has been tested and is approved as lactose and casein free, making it ideal for ease of digestion. With that said, if you have a true dairy allergy we always recommend consulting your physician.

Is your ghee grass-fed?

Yes! Our ghee is truly grass-fed! The cows are pasture raised and eat a diet of 100% grass and are supplemented in the winter with hay, bale age and trace minerals. Since the cows are not milked through the winter they are able to rest (the way nature intended.) This is the highest quality standard for grass-fed butter.

Why grass-fed?

The cows are grass-fed because the sun is the only source of new energy on the planet and the best way to capture that is to keep the fields covered year-round with a dense sward of grasses. The cows calve seasonally so that they can produce most of their milk while they are on lush pasture.

Why does your ghee taste so good?

Several reasons:
1. The butter we use is superior on many levels. Being a true grass-fed butter, the butter fat content is higher than others. The cows are cared for in exceptional ways including using European milking methods and solar panels for a thorough and gentle milking. The cows on the farm are not milked through the winter so that they do not require a high grain diet and can take the break nature intended resulting a higher butterfat.
2. We use traditional Ayurvedic techniques to prepare the ghee in small batches over an open flame.
3. We put A LOT of love into it!

How can I use my ghee?

Ghee can be used anywhere you use oil in a cooking or in herbal medicine. You can also use it in place of butter as a spread on toast or pancakes, etc. Since it is concentrated, you can get away with using less ghee than you think. So if you use 2 tbs of olive oil to sauté some veggies, you may want to start with 1 tbs of ghee. Play around with it!

Can I use ghee on my skin?

Yes! By eating ghee on a regular basis you are already doing your skin a favor by alleviating dryness. Ghee nourishes the body both inside and out. Ghee can be used to make decadent skin products. Keep an eye out for many wonderful Farm to Gold ghee products for your skin!

Will my ghee stay a solid consistency?

Ghee is solid at room temperature but just like coconut oil, it will soften at warmer temperatures. Do not be alarmed. If your ghee"melts" during the warmer months, it is still just as good to use.

Customer Reviews

Our Family tried to use coconut oil for its health benefits compared to butter in our cooking but we all missed the buttery flavor. Thank you Farm to Gold for creating a delicious and nutritious product that gives us back the flavor we were searching for! The high flashpoint of ghee is perfect for frying eggs and sautéing veggies. Your Ghee is amazing as a spread on toast and is ideal for popping and topping popcorn. It's so nice to feel good about using butter again!
